Marc Esslinger, son of frog design's <a href="http://www.goethe.de/kue/des/dos/dos/dsd/ess/en1854375.htm" rel="nofollow">Hartmut Esslinger</a>, has put together <a href="http://fudder.de/artikel/2007/07/17/origin-of-the-iphone/" rel="nofollow">photos of some of Apple's early unseen designs</a>, including those of perhaps their <a href="http://fudder.de/typo3temp/pics/5b1169e356.jpg" rel="nofollow">first "iPhone"</a>, from 1983. It didn't go into production, but even today looks pretty good, and apparently included a touch-screen and stylus, though it wasn't a cell phone. Speaking of the original 1984 Mac, it turns out that Apple’s phone designs go back at least that far.
